It was reported on October 18, 1946 that socialites across the country had been opting to get small tattoos on their ankles or knees.
This, however, did not require the use of needles and ink. A company called Gotham Hosiery came up with a painless solution. The tattoos were really stenciled on to sheer nylon pantyhose and supposedly looked quite realistic. Five designs were available at the time: A heart, a dove, a butterfly, a horseshoe, and a cupid. Sorry sailors, but there were none that featured a mermaid or the word MOM emblazoned across it.
